The FauxCon organisers have agreed to assist in the public posting
of the following apology.
A formal apology to Jye Nicholson.
We, the staff of EON press, would like to make it formally known that
we apologise to Jye Nicholson, his friends and family, and anyone that
was affected by what we now realise and understand was a particularly
cruel and unkind prank, that we are apologise profusely and completely.
When we first described our upcoming game Weapons
of the Gods, it was meant solely as sarcastic response
to an internet forum post. The prank was continued for a short
time when the author of the original post (not Jye) mistook the sarcasm
for authenticity and began a considerably long flame war.
We did not forsee that so many of the other forum members would
also miss the tone of the article and leap to our defense. In a
moment of whimsy, we decided to continue the deception much longer
than we now recognise good taste would allow.
We realised the extent of our mistake when Jye began submitting
material in response to the alleged writers guidelines that had
been written and published. It was at this point that we realised
that things had got out of hand, but we honestly did not know how
to end things with good grace. We tried putting off the publishing
date several times with invented crises, hoping that interest
would wane, but to our dismay, the purported writers for the game
remained loyal.
It was only when Jye created and ran a scenario for the non-existent
game that we realised that this had to stop. We would like to apologise
again for our poor judgement and for the hours of work that Jye and
his friends have invested in Weapons of the Gods, and hope
that he can see it in his heart to forgive us.
