FauxCon VII Theme
Superheroes and Mutations

Since the dawn of time, people have loved their superheros.
Tales of Herakles, Gilgamesh and similar heroes were the
typical fare of nights of storytelling around campfires.
As civilisation matured, these stories were written down and
passed between communities - the archetypes in the stories
appealed to every culture, not just the place of their
birth and so they spread widely, with new names and changing
opponents, but with the same internal meme.
In the 20th Century these stories re-emerged with new protaginists -
superheroes, mutants and masked heroes erupted out of comic books
and into the psyche of Western cultures. These heroes did not
contend against gods and monsters, but against super villains,
mechanical geniuses and alien menaces. Along with their cousins,
the pulp fiction hero, these champions of humanity represented
the best of what we would all like to be, even when they were
not always human themselves.
And so FauxCon 7 salutes the exemplars and paragons of our modern
day tales by encouraging out writers and players to join in the
theme for 2006 - Super Heros and Mutants!
